Removable Overdentures

Removable overdentures, also called implant-supported dentures, are a longer-lasting, more comfortable teeth replacement solution than traditional dentures. While traditional dentures rest on top of the gums, removable overdentures are supported by sturdy dental implants that have been surgically inserted in the jawbone. This promotes a more natural fit and improves chewing ability.

The main difference between removable dentures and permanent replacement teeth, like Teeth in a Day with TeethXpress™, is that the wearer can take them out at home. They are removed every night just like traditional dentures so patients can brush their gums and abutments. Permanent replacement teeth can only be removed in an office by a dentist who specializes in implants.

Traditional Dentures

  • Can have a loose, bulky or uncomfortable fit
  • Do not prevent jawbone loss, which can lead to an aged and “sunken in” facial appearance
  • Affect ability to fully enjoy a wide range of foods
  • Must be adjusted or replaced every few years

Removable Overdentures

  • Are supported by implants in conjunction with a metal bar or attachments
  • Do prevent jawbone loss
  • Allow you to eat everything but very hard or sticky foods
  • Improve ability to taste in comparison to traditional dentures
  • Can be taken out and cleaned at home
  • Require replacement of the attachments every year or so, depending on wear and tear

Permanent Teeth

  • Are supported by implants
  • Do prevent jawbone loss
  • Must be flossed, brushed and cared for like natural teeth
  • Can last for a lifetime

The Consultation

It takes multiple appointments to craft the perfect set of removable overdentures. First, patients meet with us to take X-rays and discuss whether they are a good candidate. The ideal patient has enough bone to support the dental implants. If jawbone density is inadequate, they may still be a candidate after a bone graft procedure is performed. Some patients may have conditions like diabetes that could interfere with the implant procedure.

After a few months of healing, we make a small incision over each implant to expose it. A healing cap is placed on top of each implant to make sure the gums do not interfere with the abutments. Once healing is complete, abutments are added. These snap into the attachments on the overdenture for a snug fit. We then take a final mold of the gums and abutments to complete the removable overdenture.

After another two weeks, the patient is ready for their brand-new set of teeth! We work with them to ensure everything fits and attaches correctly and give them instructions on how to care for their removable overdentures at home.

The Process If You’re a Candidate for Implant-Secured Overdentures

The first step of the overdenture process involves taking an impression to create temporary dentures for the patient to wear throughout the surgery recovery process.

The next step is the dental implant surgery. Holes are drilled into the jawbone and titanium implants are inserted into the holes to mimic natural tooth roots. To ensure a good overdenture fit, there needs to be at least two implants in the lower jaw and four implants in the upper jaw. The gums are then stitched to facilitate healing. Through the process of osseointegration, bone grows around the implants, making them part of the jaw.
